Farmer Ken, of Free Bird Farm, will be at the Vanderbilt YMCA (5th floor) to talk about the farm and answer questions.  This is likely the only time Ken will make it to the city all year, so take advantage of this opportunity to meet him!  The Farmer Talk is open to all — you do not need to be a registered member to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The CSA book club is reading The Reason I Jump, written by a 13-year old autistic boy. We will be wandering around Flushing and taking in a meal at the Ganesh Temple Canteen.

July 10, 2012 – Cooking Demonstration
We are excited to offer our first cooking demonstration at the CSA! Rachel Crawford will be showing us how to prepare Summer Vegetable Frittata and Raw Beet & Carrot Salad with Cumin Dressing, and we will have copies of the recipe for you to take home. Rachel is a lover of vegetables and an avid home cook.

She has participated in cook-offs, hosted elaborate supper clubs, and volunteered with Slow Food teaching elementary school kids about seasonal food and how to cook. She has a personal recipe blog, sharing-food.com, and can also be found on kitchensurfing.com, a new site that allows anyone to search for and hire personal chefs online.

July 11, 2012 – CSA Happy Hour
The Turtle Bay Happy Hour is on July 11, 2011, 5:30 – 8:00pm at Midtown 1015 at Sutton Place (1015 2nd Ave).

August 7, 2012  – CSA Potluck Dinner – Tuesday @ 6:30 p.m.
Get to know fellow members of the Turtle Bay CSA over dinner on the YMCA sun deck, which is just off the 5th floor staircase. Bring a dish to pass (show off what you make with your veggie share!) or pick up some beverages on your way to the event and enjoy the evening.

August 8, 2012 – CSA Book Club 
The CSA book club is starting off the summer with Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, and will be discussing it at a member’s house over appetizers and wine on August 8th.

September 11, 2012 – Learn to Pickle
Nick Smolney is a new addition to the Turtle Bay CSA – with 2012 being his first season. Nick will be demonstrating for us how to pickle, and will bring with him some books as well as the tools of the trade: pressure canner, jars, etc.

You can pickle too!

He will also bring samples to taste, including picked beets, carrots, green beans, okra, garlic dill cucumbers, and good old bread and butter chips.

CSA members get politically engaged

September 19, 2012 – Letter Writing for Safer 5th & 6th Avenues
Transportation Alternatives leads a letter-writing campaign for safer streets on 5th & 6th Avenues.  In 2010, the CSA’s letter-writing campaign was part of 2,000 other letters collected in support of 1st & 2nd Ave bike lanes, which have since been installed! Here’s hoping this time is just as successful!

September 27, 2012 – Core Group Open House
Come to an open Core Group Meeting to learn more about joining the Turtle Bay CSA core group in 2013. The current core group will be there to explain what we do, discuss our volunteer needs for next year, and learn more about you and your interests.

October 1, 2012 – CSA Book Club
Turtle Bay CSA book club has selected Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma as book our second read of the season. The discussion date is Monday, October 1st. We will be meeting at Soccarat, a new paella/tapas bar on 2nd Avenue at 6:30PM. Additional information on Michael Pollan can be found on his website: http://michaelpollan.com/

October 6, 2012 – Plant Daffodil Bulbs
No experience necessary!  Join fellow community members in this volunteer initiative of  Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. We will be planting spring-flowering bulbs in Hammarskjold Park. Come prepared to work for at least 2-3 hours. Wear casual clothes and sturdy shoes. Bring bottled water. Tools and gloves provided. Meet us at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza – 47th St. btwn 1st and 2nd Aves, in Katherine Hepburn Garden, from 10AM-1PM. www.hammarskjoldplaza.org

April 14, 2011 – Plant Pansies in Midtown
We’ll be planting pansies in Katherine Hepburn Garden on Thursday, April 14th, 5:30-7:30PM.  Meet us at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza – 47th St. btwn 1st and 2nd Aves, in Katherine Hepburn Garden.  Equipment is provided. Be dressed for yard work and wear sturdy shoes.

Volunteer Day at the Farm

June 26th, 2011 – Volunteer Day at the Farm
Spend a day volunteering at Free Bird Farm. As the June sun warms the soil, seedlings can easily get choked out by an early-season explosion of weeds. But many hands make light work!  Help the farm by weeding, snapping garlic scapes and other unskilled farm labor.  Kids are welcome!

Potluck at Bryant Park

July 22, 2010 – Potluck at Bryant Park
Join us on 7/22 for our very first potluck picnic!  We’ll be on the lawn at Bryant Park starting at 6:30PM.  Bring your own blanket to sit on.  The CSA will provide cups, plates, napkins and cutlery.  Those who don’t feel like cooking can bring wine or drinks.  Children welcome!

August 26, 2010 – Potluck at the YMCA
Our second CSA potluck dinner is a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other before the farm trip in a couple of weeks, and to sample the culinary creations our fellow share members have been making with all of the bountiful vegetables, eggs, poultry and fruit we’ve been getting over the past few weeks!  The potluck will be held at the Y’s outdoor patio.  Share members are welcome to bring their friends and family members.  We would like to encourage everyone to bring items that incorporate food from our CSA share or seasonal produce, although you are welcome to bring other types of food as well.

October 6, 2010 – Cocktail Demonstration

Ever wondered if there was a world beyond salads, sautéing, grilling and roasting for your CSA share? Look no farther!  We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a cocktail demonstration and tasting exclusively for the members of the Turtle Bay CSA, showcasing the talents of veteran mixologist Dinah Peña of the Stone Rose Lounge in Manhattan.  Dinah will be showing CSA members how to incorporate a variety of seasonal and local produce to create tasteful and inventive cocktails at home.

Attendance is limited and seats will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.  Please note that there will be a charge of $20 per attendee, which will be used to cover the cost of ingredients.
